Levels of snoring:
Very mild resistance to the airflow from any upper airway obstruction can cause very mild snoring that does not affect the sleep of an individual. But, if the resistance to airway increases that arouses the patient from sleep to maintain the required ventilation. This does not potentially decrease the oxygen level in the blood. It is just a transient arousal. This is known as respiratory effect related arousal. When the resistance further increases considerably, the efforts made by the patient to maintain adequate ventilation and thus oxygen saturation will not be enough. Then the patient struggles to maintain the required levels of oxygen. This causes breathing related sleep problems and sleep becomes a problem. This is termed as obstructive sleep apnoea or hypopnoea syndrome. This is dangerous to health.
Causes of snoring:
Snoring is a multi factorial common serious problem. Many factors are responsible, like the anatomy of the mouth and sinuses, consumption of alcohol and certain medications, obesity, sinus and allergy issues. As you sleep the oral muscles along with the throat muscles relax. The relaxation is so severe that it can sometimes block the airway. Hence it results in vibration. More the narrowing more is the vibration. As the vibration increases the snoring becomes louder.
Snoring is because of:
Anatomy of the mouth: A thick and low soft palate, obese people with extra throat tissues, or a long uvula can cause snoring due to airway obstruction and causing vibration. Alcohol consumption: Alcohol can relax throat muscles and decreases defence mechanism against the obstruction to the airway.
Nasal problems: Chronic nasal issues or a deviated nasal septum can lead to snoring. Sleep position: Sleeping on the back increases snoring.
Bedtime remedies to mute snoring:
Sleeping position has to be changed. Head end raise helps in breathing more freely and thus reduces airway obstruction and helps in snoring. Sleeping on back is encouraged. The bedroom air should be maintained moist. A humidifier serves best to this purpose. This prevents drying of the nasal and throat membranes and decreases the resistance to airflow and reduces vibration.
The nasal passage has to be cleared of any secretions or debris before going to bed. A nasal decongestant can be used for this purpose. Any allergy medications if required can be used to reduce airway obstruction and reduce the vibration n the tissues.
Though snoring causes sleep disturbance to you and your partner, it is just a physical issue. It should be not taken personally and resorting to anti snoring mouth pieces is the best option.
