Stress is caused by experiencing, feeling or seeing something that we perceive to be a threat, either physically or emotionally. If we perceive events to be a threat to our normal functioning, wellbeing or self esteem we experience the negative thoughts and emotions we all associate with stress. However, the effects of stress are not limited to what goes on within our brains - they permeate our whole body and, if sustained, can have powerful and harmful effects on our physical health.
It's the link between what we think and feel and the activity in the rest of our body that's mediated (at least in part) by the stress hormone Cortisol. The more stressful we perceive life to be, the more Cortisol we release into the bloodstream. Although Cortisol is an essential hormone that performs a wide range of vital functions, producing too much at the wrong times of day can put our health at risk.
A sustained period of stress can increase our chance of succumbing to a range of illnesses, depending on individual susceptibilities in terms of genetic predisposition and lifestyle and potentially, stress can also worsen some existing conditions.
Although it can be difficult to tease out all the factors that may lead to illness, research continues to find clear evidence that stress is an issue we should all take seriously: stress not only threatens the quality of our lives but also the state of our health.
How can Hypnosis and CBT help?
When you are in a state of hypnosis certain physiological changes take place; decrease in heart rate, decrease in blood pressure, decrease in metabolic rate and oxygen consumption, decrease in skeletal muscle tension, and a decrease in alpha activity to mention just a few alterations. With these changes the body begins to return to a state of chemical and hormonal balance, thus functioning at a healthier level. Hypnosis creates a distinct state of mind and opens up a communication between your conscious and subconscious mind. With this communication path open, the subconscious mind can accept suggestions and new ideas that will help you to control and change the way you think, so that an ‘activating’ event that would normally have caused an emotional, psychological and biologically stressed state, no longer does so.
